FAQs

  • Q: What are you announcing?

A: “Christie’s Green Auction: A Bid to Save the Earth” convenes top international collectors and members of the cultural, philanthropic, public policy and environmental communities for a high-profile evening auction at 7pm on Thursday, April 22, the 40th anniversary of Earth Day), with the profits from the sale benefiting four environmental not-for-profit organizations (NRDC, Oceana, Conservation International and Central Park Conservancy). A companion silent auction powered by Charitybuzz.com from April 8th – May 6th, 2010. NBC Universal, as part of it’s ongoing environmental initiative, “Green is Universal, will serve as the official media partner for the event.

  • Q: How did you select the four organizations? How will the proceeds be divided?

A: All four of the beneficiary organizations have a top rating (four-stars) by rating agency Charity Navigator. In its second year, it is likely that the auction will benefit these four organizations and possibly 1-2 additional, internationally headquartered not-for-profit organizations. We are taking this approach to encourage active participation from all environmental organizations in supporting the inaugural year, not simply the four beneficiaries for 2010. We will divide all the proceeds proportionally among the four organizations via Christie's charity.

  • Q: How international is it?

A: First and foremost, participation helps with the ultimate “global” goal: addressing today’s environmental challenges and protecting the planet. In fact, all four of the beneficiary organizations have international members, donors and visibility. Additionally, 3 out of 4 organizations have programs that reach beyond US borders. In its second year, it is likely that the Green Auction will benefit four other internationally headquartered not-for-profit organizations, so we are encouraging active participation from all environmental organizations in supporting the inaugural year, not simply the four beneficiaries for 2010. Finally, the honorary host committee is made up of collectors, environmentalists, celebrities and leaders from around the world and this fact, combined with the overall media attention for the Green Auction, will ensure visibility for those organizations and individuals who choose to participate. And perhaps most importantly, participation helps with the ultimate goal: addressing today’s environmental challenges globally. The auction will be available globally via Christie’s LIVE — Christie’s is the only international auction house to offer real-time bidding online from any where in the world with high-speed Internet access. Additionally, our client base and the membership bases of the four beneficiary organizations are extremely global and bode well for a truly international affair.

  • Q: Will you repeat the auction? With the same four beneficiaries?

A: These are early days. Our focus is on April 2010 only at this point. Since our model is scaleable and repeatable, we hope to repeat it in the future and benefit four other not-for-profits.

  • Q: How valuable will it be?

A: We are aiming to raise a significant amount of money but cannot yet quantify given the somewhat priceless nature of many of the experiences we are offering. Auction sales will be supplemented by ads/contributions/sponsorships.

  • Q: Are you selling sponsorships?

A: Yes. Please see the sponsorship packet for further details.

  • Q: Will it be ticketed? How many seats? For how much?

A: The auction will seat approximately 600 people, and will be ticketed but not for a fee.  Top collectors and celebrities will be invited in order to support the ulitmate goal of rasing funds and awareness for environmental advocacy. It will be available globally via www.christies.com as well.

  • Q: Will there be any parties/events around the auction?

A: We will organize previews and a VIP reception.

  • What is the role of NBC Universal?

A: During its annual “Earth Week” of environmentally themed coverage, NBCU will use its vast portfolio of both on-air and online media assets to raise “green” awareness, promoting environmental messages and “A Bid to Save the Earth” campaign’s call to action. A wide array of talent will participate throughout the week across NBCU brands including Bravo, USA Network, Oxygen, TODAY, Access Hollywood, MSNBC, CNBC, iVillage and Local Media.

  • Q: What is A Bid to Save the Earth?

A: It is the branding campaign, under which, the performers will cover The Green Auction, and related Earth Day events/activities. “A Bid to Save the Earth” is also the call to action around which NBC Universal’s assets will aim to raise green awareness and help drive support for the environmental organization partners.

  • Q: What will be in the auction?

A: We are just beginning to solicit. Our aim is to present a topflight selection of 40 works and experiences (e.g., paintings, photos, architecture, design, and fashion by artists involved in environmental causes or supportive of sustainability, landscape pictures, and green colors/themes). We will offer a companion silent auction powered by Charitybuzz.com for smaller priced lots to allow for even broader participation globally. We have recently secured works from Keith Tyson, Maya Lin, Olafur Eliasson, Subodh Gupta and others.

  • Q: What have you secured so far?

A: A variety of lots consisting of works by Keith Tyson, Olafur Eliasson, Maya Lin, Wolf Kahn as well as, stays at luxury resorts (including the Begawan Giri in Bali and San Antonio in Mexico).

  • Q: Who will be the auctioneer?

A: Christopher Burge will take the auction, ensuring the greatest possible interest of serious collectors.

  • Q: Why are you doing this?

A: Profits from the auction will benefit 4 environmental not-for-profits. Environmental concerns are increasingly important to our clients, their families, and our staff and we share their concerns. The auction will serve as the first carbon neutral auction with e-cats and digital marketing materials, Christie's LIVE for real-time online bidding, and the option of carbon off-sets for travelers.

  • Q: What is the context of the Green auction within Christie's business plan and history?

A: Christie's has a long tradition of acting as a conduit for charitable projects. As a marketplace we excel in bringing together different stakeholders/communities. In the Second World War we held the famous Red Cross sales, more recently we have worked with Elton John's Aids Foundation; AmFAR (through the sale of Oscar Dresses); the sale of Princess Diana's Dresses to name a few. In addition, our auctioneers raise more than $25 million per annum through their activities at externally coordinated events. For more information on Christie's long history of involvement in philanthropic causes please contact Christie's PR department.

  • Q: What about the carbon footprint created by the holding of the event?

A: Christie’s is actively looking for ways of making the auction itself as carbon neutral as possible. We are offering carbon offset opportunities for those who attend the auction and Native Energy will be offsetting the event and auction lots.

  • Q: Who is signed on?

A: The list grows every day. We have signed on collectors Howard and Cindy Rachofsky of Dallas, environmentalist and documentarian Susan Cohn-Rockefeller and David Rockefeller Jr, environmentalist David de Rothschild, collectors Thomas Kempner Jr. and Robert J. Fisher, fashion and sustainability expert Julie Gilhart of Barneys, Francois-Henri Pinault & Salma Hayek, Mr. & Mrs. Jonathan Tisch, Matt Lauer, Cameron Diaz, Sigourney Weaver, Caryn & Jeff Zucker, and Christophe de Menil. Honorary hosts also include Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire, Christine and Steve Schwarzman, the Tischs and more.

  • Q: Will you waive your commission?

A: We intend to waive commissions and buyers premium. We will not realize a profit from it. We intend to divide all of the proceeds among the four charities via Christie's Charity.

  • Q: What is Christie's Charity?

A: As a commercial organization, Christie’s incorporated a not for profit Christie's charity in order to process this sale. Skadden Arps provided the services pro bono to help with this.

  • Q: How does one get involved?

A: If you are not invited to the live event, there are many ways you can still participate in A Bid to Save the Earth. Visit www.ABidtoSavetheEarth.com to donate, bid on silent auction items, find ways to volunteer and learn how to reduce your carbon footprint. We are now recruiting top collectors and celebrities for the honorary host committee, for donors who want to contribute a work of art or unique “green” experience. We welcome all good will and offers and are particularly interested in lots valued at $100k+ for the Evening Auction. We are holding a companion silent auction, which will accommodate contributions at lower price points. Advertising and sponsorship opportunities may also be available on a limited basis. All queries may be directed to Toby Usnik (tusnik@christies.com) or Cathy Elkies (celkies@christies.com).
